When/Why did you start CrossFit?
In August 2014 I caught a replay of 2014 CrossFit Games on TV and thought this looks pretty fun. It reminded me of some of the WOD’s we did while I was in the Navy during the Gulf War. Soon after a co-worker of mine said she was doing CrossFit which she said she loved, and she wanted to take me to a met con to try it out. So after 5 months of procrastinating and pressure from my Wife I decided to try it out, I was very nervous and didn’t want to look like an idiot (which I’m sure I did). So one Sunday in late January, I met Brian and his whistle for the first time. I pretty much thought my heart was going to explode; I tasted blood but wasn’t bleeding. I realized this is what I’ve been looking for; I was hooked and finished my on-ramp in Feb. 2015. I started CrossFit to get back in shape, I had some injuries that I let get away from me, I was 30 plus lbs. overweight and I just had enough of it. I really felt like it’s now or never. I wanted my boys to grow up with a Dad who wasn’t limited physically and could keep up with them and be around for many years.
How has CrossFit changed you?
CrossFit has changed me in ways that I could have never imagined. Besides being stronger, I am much more positive about life in general, my whole outlook has changed, I eat cleaner, I have more flexibility, stamina and endurance. Within 4 months I lost 25lbs, gained a bunch of lean muscle mass but most importantly my Doctor took me completely off blood pressure and high cholesterol medication that I had been on for 8 years! The CFLT community is top shelf! I am inspired everyday by the members and coaches; the positivity in the gym is amazing and really has guided me through this. Not only do I look forward to working out, I crave it. I am so grateful for all the help and support by everyone at CFLT! When I first started I was very uncomfortable with the Olympic Lifts, though I have a long way to go to get to where I want to be, I feel confident I’ll get there!
What are your strengths/weaknesses in the gym?
I’m not really sure of my strengths other than my willingness to learn. I feel my squats have come a long way. My weaknesses are for sure pull-ups and double unders! But I will keep at it, and nail them down one day soon.
What is your favorite WOD?
My favorite WOD is Grace and DT along with anyone of Brian’s chippers!
I have been blessed with a beautiful healthy family. My awesome wife is very supportive and often takes the brunt of what the kids dish out so I can make it the gym, which I am very grateful for. I have a 20 year old daughter and 2 Sons age 7 and 4, they keep me busy at home and are just my world. I have worked in Law Enforcement for the Department of Justice/Department of Homeland Security for over 21 years, 6 years as an Officer, 8 years as a canine handler and the 7+ as an Agent. I am currently assigned to a Fugitive Operations Arrest Team. My job often takes me around the globe for short periods of time which is a blessing and a curse. The only regret I have about crossfit is that I didn’t find it sooner!— We are so proud of you ICE MAN!!
