When/Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in February of 2013. I had heard of the program while in school and would attempt some of the workouts with friends but joining Lower Town was my official introduction. Why? I was coming off of 7 months of working 70 hrs a week and needed to get back in shape and around awesome people.
How has CrossFit changed you?
I’m in the best shape of my life. Learning new moves, double-unders, handstand push-ups, cartwheels etc. has been fun and challenging.
What are your strengths/weaknesses in the gym?
Rowing. I have a decent engine so lengthy or multiple round WOD’s don’t scare me too much.
Upper-body body-weight movements. Dips, pull-ups, push-ups etc. I also have a tendency to want to go light on the weight for a lot of the workouts, but all of the coaches are great in making me push myself to get to an appropriate level.
What is your favorite WOD?
I like everything involving the Olympic bar minus deadlifts. Workouts that have a 1k buy-in row make me smile as well.
Joel has a BS in Business General Management. He currently works for Loomis Armored (Brinks competition), and is shooting for a career in law enforcement. “The people I have met through Lower Town and the coaches that have taken the time to invest in me has been a blessing and highlight of the past two years.” Joel was injured last summer..but did not stop training. He trained smart, stayed light on lifts, modified ALL WODS, and avoided certain movements until he was 100%.
Joel recently destroyed the gym record for a 1,000 Meter Row with a ridiculous time of 2:55.3. COME ON!! We could not be more proud of you Joel!! Keep up the good work in your journey for living a healthy lifestyle!! Can’t wait to see what you accomplish in 2015!!
