Meet Head Coach: Tonya Barker

Tonya’s path to coaching CrossFit has been a natural progression. She started CrossFitting in February of 2011 and became hooked! She liked that she was able to satisfy endurance training with weightlifting and body-weight calisthenics in just one hour. Up until this point, she had a hard time finding time for all of it. As her love of CrossFit (and her time spent at the gym) grew, she knew she wanted to start training others in the discipline so she got her Level 1 CrossFit Certification. According to her, “Working with people, and showing them what they are capable of, is an addiction for me. I love seeing their reaction when they do something they thought they couldn’t do. It’s beyond rewarding.”

Certifications:

  • Level 1 CrossFit Coach
  • Level 2 CrossFit Coach
  • Certified CrossFit Kids Instructor
  • USAW Weightlifting Certified
  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts of Business Administration
  • PCF Regional Athlete 2012 & 2015

In my youth I was always into sports. However, my true journey for me started with my weight loss journey back in 2013, I weighed 270 lbs. When I saw that, I knew I needed a change because I was on blood pressure medication for high blood pressure. I knew I wasn't in best the shape for my line of work being a Physical Therapist Assistant. I originally started at Planet Fitness, yet after about 3 months he became bored with that style of working out. I had heard about CrossFit from seeing it online and some friends of mine had been doing it. I gave it chance, I signed up for my first on-ramp session with HyperFit USA in Ann Arbor, and after doing my first on-ramp I met Pukie (I threw up after doing the Baseline workout). I was hooked ever since. Once, I was able to join group class, I remember I was the last to finish and even though I was the last to finish the others in the class cheered me on and to me that was something you can't get anywhere else. After completing CrossFit for about 6 months he noticed the changes with his body and didn't have to take blood pressure medication anymore. CrossFit has become a huge part of my life and the CrossFit community is why I keep coming back. I always thought about coaching because with my real job being a Physical Therapist Assistant would assist me because I know how the body moves. I gained my CrossFit L1 certification back in 2017, though after the first day of the course I felt so overwhelmed and become more in love with the methodology. Being a coach is a great reward because you get a chance to help other athlete gain their first PR and encouraging them to finish a WOD when they doubted themself. I work at an Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic in Plymouth.

I have been a member of PCFLT since 2009. My initial goal of joining the PCFLT was to lose weight. I lost 40 pounds and never looked back. I loved everything that CrossFit stood for and how it made me feel and made some great friends in the process. By being a coach I can show people that they can do what they think is “impossible”. The greatest feeling as a coach is to see someone smile after they just PR’d or did something for the first time that they didn’t think they could do. In my personal life I am a Help Desk Support Manager and have a son Drew.

I have always been active one way or another in my life. I started playing soccer when I was seven and continued to play competitively until I was 20. In my early 20’s I got into weightlifting to stay in shape. I stumbled on CrossFit about two years ago and started classes in early 2014. I coach because I enjoy motivating and doing what I can to put smiles on people’s faces. Besides pushing people mentally and physically in classes, I do my best to create an environment that everyone appreciates.

I had been athletic for most of my life, playing football and baseball youth sports and competing in football and wrestling in middle/high school. Upon attending college, sports were no longer a major part of my lifestyle other than the occasional recreational activity. My more sedentary lifestyle, mixed with poor eating & partying, led me to gain a significant amount of weight. After graduation I knew I needed to lose weight & get back into shape, so I joined a local rec facility. While there, transitioning between machines & cardio equipment, I realized I was bored out of my mind & if I didn’t find something else I most likely wouldn’t stick to this. I decided to look for a Crossfit because I had seen one of my friends posting about it. I signed up for an on-ramp class at a nearby gym & the rest is history. Crossfit truly helped me do a 180 and get back to an active way of life. Over 10+ years I can honestly say I don’t ever feel bored with the workouts. Knowing the profound impact it had on my lifestyle, I decided that I wanted to be able to help others make similar changes in their lives. I received my first coaching certificate in 2013 and have continued pursuing other coaching specialties since then. I truly enjoy helping others unlock their potential and achieve the goals they felt were impossible. Crossfit not only helped me completely overhaul my health, but I’ve also been fortunate to meet some of my best friends through relationships forged in the gym. Throughout 2 different job moves I’ve always been able to find a new gym & utilize it as a social outlet and a way to meet new people. I landed at PCFLT back in 2016 and got back into coaching about a year later. I love the community at the gym and am proud of the relationship we have in hosting local competitions throughout the year. Outside of the gym you can usually find me doing something active or adventurous. I enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, bike rides, and hiking. I also like to spend time around anything with an engine- from riding motorcycles, to track racing, or just wrenching on vehicles.

Brian grew up in the martial arts, having trained in Tae Kwon Do as a child and into his teens. As a young adult he found Muay Thai kickboxing and fell in love. He found a new focus for his competitiveness and trained for many years and eventually went pro in addition to teaching. He started CrossFit as a way to prepare for his fights, and soon found himself more interested in Olympic lifting than fighting. He has been active in the CrossFit community for almost 6years now and is still eager to achieve more as both an athlete and a trainer. Brian also teaches our Olympic weightlifting class. Brian lives here, in Plymouth, with his wife and fellow CrossFitter, Martina. You can see their wedding photos in the gym (yes they were married at Plymouth Crossfit Lower Town).

I played sports year round growing up and when I started university and no longer had a sport, I found myself lost. After a friend introduced me to CrossFit, I was hooked. It has become an integral part of my life and has provided me with great friendships and the mindset to push through my own challenges. I coach so that others can find it in themselves to push through barriers and tackle obstacles they never thought they could.

In my youth and as an adult I played most major sports at one time or another, but my passion was baseball and wrestling. I currently enjoy numerous outdoor activities/sports with my family; kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, snowboarding, camping, hiking and mountain biking, being a hockey Dad to a couple of crazy kids to name a few. My CF story began in late 2014, I had been trying to get fit on my own with the same old tactics, however I never seemed to be moving the needle in positive direction. While searching for new workouts ideas, I came across a video of 2014 CrossFit games, it reminded me of some of the group and creative workouts we use to do while on deployment. So, in early 2015 with the urging of my wife and a co-worker I hobbled into Plymouth CrossFit Lower Town. I was beat-up, feeling broken and concerned about being able to perform some of the movements because I was plagued with chronic injuries stemming from my military and law enforcement career, I honestly really wasn’t expecting much. That day, one of the owners of the gym sat down with me for well over an hour, he explained scaling and movement in ways I had never heard before! Not only was I impressed with him talking to me unscheduled, but his understanding, knowledge and ability to relate to the situation, blew me away! I realized then, that I may have finally found something special. My first workout was hard; however, I was able to perform it with the multiple scaling options my coach suggested. After that workout I was completely hooked! CrossFit has not only changed my life in so many positive ways but also my family’s life, we are more fit, more nutritionally sound and happier. As time and my ability progressed, I realized that I wanted to be on the coaching end of CrossFit as well, being a master’s athlete (45-49) and my background, I felt that I might be able to “pay it forward” and help folks in similar situations that this gym’s coaches helped me. In January 2019 I completed and received my CF-L1 certificate, after an in-depth in-house coaching program, I began coaching bootcamp and CrossFit classes. My whole life has been geared towards helping people in one way or another. I am extremely grateful for being able to be a coach at this gym, helping and impacting the athlete’s and their family’s lives is beyond satisfying. There is nothing more rewarding then watching an athlete break their own barrier and succeed then celebrate their big and small personal achievements. This community at PCFLT is second to none, we are welcoming, encouraging and truly appreciative of each other! I have established life-long friends here who really are family to me, I am blessed to be a part of it! “Today I will do what other’s won’t, so tomorrow I will do what others can’t.”

Since joining CrossFit his overall joint health and mobility has increased and so the passion to help others feel the same way through CrossFit was established. Gratefully, I have heard hundreds of times, “Thank you so much! I couldn’t have done this without you.” Regardless of what venue I am working with a person, my response to this is almost always the same, “All I can do is show you; YOU did all the work, not me.” People need to own their own accomplishments and take pride in how far they have come. Both physically and mentally, most individuals underestimate as to what they are capable. I believe my job is one of many named transformers. I attempt to find and help remove the “blocks” individuals create for themselves so that they can make better decisions and gain confidence and self-worth through working through one’s spiritual, mental, and/or physical weaknesses. My mission is to help guide you to becoming the best version of yourself.
